Barkers - 1882 Café & Bistro

Barkers department store in Northallerton is a family owned business. The 1882 Café & Bistro, adjoining the main store, offers table service with a locally sourced, seasonal menu, and a café on the ground floor; both are accessible from the high street.

Following a refurbishment in 2012, an update was needed and the brief was a lighter, more contemporary Scandi look, with natural finishes, planting and better lighting.

In the ground floor Café we were able to retain the timber floor and re-upholster existing banquette seating. The servery has been altered, to suit evolving service processes, and re-clad in distressed timber planks with a new light quartz top. A new wash-up area was created by building up part of the lower floor area; this will further improve operation and service. Most of the walls have been clad in white-washed timber planks, giving a slightly rustic feel. New furniture throughout and beautiful green and white feature tiles complete the fresh new look.

The first floor Bistro has a new parquet style flooring throughout, and the small service counter has been re-clad to match the Café. New furniture and additional banquette seating has been upholstered in faux tan leather with light teal accents. The seating is split into three distinct areas, each having specific features such as distressed timber seating goalpost, new fireplace and log store, panelled teal feature wall and vintage mirror with plush marbled velvet seating. Again, the main walls are clad in white-washed timber planks, with the addition of mirrors, planting and botanical themed artwork throughout.

This project was due to start as lockdown began, but 5 months later it is finally complete. A fresh start moving forward and hopefully enticing customers back to the high street.
